Make some of this and your dog really will be your best friend
Liver cake is often used as a reward when training dogs. There is, however, no reason why you shouldn't make some for use as an occasional treat.
This recipe is flexible and the quantity of the ingredients may be varied to suit. For example you could reduce the quantity of liver if cost is important. As long as there is a taste of liver in it your pet will love it. You can add additional ingredients to add variety - if you have a piece of cheese in the fridge that is past its best (not mouldy though) grate it and add that. Bits of bacon may also be added, basically, as long as it doesn't break the mixer and your dog likes it then try it.
Remember .... The smellier the better!!!
The one ingredient that shouldn't be skimped on though is garlic. It is good for dogs and, unlike in humans, helps eliminate bad breath, as well as being good for skin/coat problems.
Ingredients:
- 1 pound (500g) of liver (any sort)
- ¼ cup (60 ml or 2 fl oz) vegetable oil
- ½ cup (120 ml or 4 fl oz) water
- At least 3 cloves of garlic
- 2 cups flour (we use plain flour but self raising flour or porridge oats can be substituted)
- 1 tsp baking powder (unless using self raising flour)
- Any other tasty bits you want to add
Method:
Place liver, oil, water, garlic and optional extras into a food processor or blender and liquefy them. (This will be easier if the liver, garlic and extras are first cut into small pieces).
Pour them into a bowl and add flour until you have a stiff but sticky batter.
Pour into a well greased baking tray (or line one with baking parchment). Bake at 180°C (Gas Mark 4 or 350 °F) for at least one hour.
After 1 hour remove from oven and slice in half. If it is still pink, return to the oven for a further 15 minutes - it must not be undercooked.
Allow to cool and cut into half-inch (1 cm) cubes. Immediately freeze surplus until required. |
